Island Visitors
Overview
Aloha, visitors to Maui
will notice the incredible natural diversity
with microclimates ranging from rainforest
to desert. The island's relatively small size
means most day trips are easy to handle even
for families with small children. In fact,
it is not unusual for a family to visit the
summit of Haleakala (the 10,023-foot-tall
volcano) and snorkel on Maui's calm blue ocean
waters on the same day!
Maui is the second
largest island in the Hawaiian Island chain
and is approximately 48 miles long, and about
26 miles
at the widest point. Maui has a land mass
of 727 Square miles.
Formed by two giant
shield volcanoes, when seen from above Maui
even looks like the head and torso of a man.
West Maui, the head, is the older portion
of the island, and at one time the volcano
that formed it was probably as large as Haleakala
whose flanks form the whole East Maui's "body."
